Northern Montezuma 8/24/24

10 Members of EBS met the MAC under clear skies and temps in the 50's.  Holly, Steve & Lori, Yang, Leslie, Dave & Joan, Kevin, Linda & I.   We walked down the trail to the south.  First highlight was a pair  of Common Yellowthroats.  One juvenile being fed by a parent.  Down at the ponds, there was a large group of Green-winged Teal and also some Semipalmated Sandpipers, with Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs. The day was starting to warm up as we headed for the wooded area, but by then the mosquitos were getting hungry.  It didn't take long to reconsider our plans and headed over to the Morgan Rd DEC complex where we picked up 20 species. Some huge numbers of Swallows occupy some phone & power line space which I didn't account for.  Also apologies in general if I missed some species in the count.

Next stop was Guys Marsh for the walk out to the observation deck. 22 species were seen there. Common Gallinules were whining prolifically.

Final stop of the day was at the observation point on East Rd overlooking Knox-Marcellus Marsh where a large crowd had gathered to see the American Avocet.  Typical K-M viewing, it was very distant so feeding behavior was as useful as plumage in identifying it.  All in all, a pretty good outing.
