Impromptu Trip to Long Lake w/ Joan Collins 1/28-1/30/25

Updated: Feb 6

Attended by 14 members with most staying at the Long View Lodge which featured a common area with fireplace and also provided excellent cuisine for our evening meals. On Wednesday, our target day to be with Joan, the

weather was atrociously bad. Birding in a Blizzard is the only way to describe it. Great comradery amid some challenging conditions. Joan wrote up a summary of the main event which appears below. Steve B

It was great to see everyone on Wednesday!  You were all remarkably dedicated birders to endure the winter storm to see birds!  We tallied 15 species by visiting the following areas: In Long Lake: Stewart’s; Marsh along Rt. 30; John Dillon Park area along Rt. 30; usual Canada Jay feeding spot along Rt. 30; Sabattis Road; during the heavy snow we moved to Tupper Lake and visited: McLaughlin Ave., Leboeuf St., Pine St. and Underwood Rd.; then back to Long Lake: Sabattis Road with a stop for Red Crossbills; stop at Round Lake Trailhead; Sabattis Bog; and Sabattis Station; Long Lake feeders across from Stewart’s at the end of the day.  Here is our list:

Wild Turkey - 1! In Tupper Lake along Underwood Rd.

Hairy Woodpecker - several

Canada Jay - at least 8 (2 near John Dillon Park along Rt. 30; 2 at usual Rt. 30 feeding area; and at least 4 at Sabattis Bog)

American Crow - a few

Common Raven - several pairs - courtship time

Black-capped Chickadee

Golden-crowned Kinglet - 2

Red-breasted Nuthatch

White-breasted Nuthatch - Long Lake feeders across from Stewart's

Red Crossbill - Rt. 30 marsh; Sabattis Rd. - at least 6 gritting and a pair mated!!!; Sabattis Bog.

White-winged Crossbill - Rt. 30 marsh; John Dillon - great views!, Round Lake along Sabattis Rd. and Sabattis Bog

Pine Siskin - Flock vocalizing over us at dawn when we left Stewart's

American Tree Sparrow - 1 at a feeder in Tupper Lake along Underwood Rd. and 1 at Sabattis Bog!

Dark-eyed Junco - Long Lake feeders across from Stewart's

Northern Cardinal - 1 in Tupper Lake along Underwood Rd.

I think we fared pretty well given the snow storm.  I hope to see you all again in better weather conditions!

Take care,

Joan
